REACT Team 6006 exists to serve the community, and that responsibility extends beyond emergency and disaster situations.
Throughout the year, community organizations, charitable groups and other organizations conduct activities that depend heavily on volunteers. Team 6006 members can contribute their time, communications capabilities and practical experience to support these activities where appropriate.
Community service is also an important part of maintaining an active and capable volunteer organization.
Service Beyond the Radio
Although communications is central to REACT, being useful to the community sometimes means doing more than operating a radio.
Members may assist with community activities, charitable initiatives, sporting events and other public-service projects. Depending on the activity, volunteers may help with communications, coordination, monitoring, logistics or other reasonable support requested by organizers.
Our constitution recognizes this broader role. Team 6006's objectives include supporting community activities and participating in citizen and community programs while promoting safety and public service.
The objective is not to replace the organizations responsible for an activity. Instead, REACT volunteers provide an additional resource where our people and capabilities can be useful.
Building Relationships Before They Are Needed
Emergency preparedness depends heavily on relationships.
An emergency is a poor time for organizations to meet one another for the first time.
Regular participation in community activities gives volunteers opportunities to work alongside different organizations, understand how events are managed and develop working relationships with the people involved.
Those experiences can make future cooperation considerably easier.
Experience Through Service
Community activities also provide valuable practical experience for our members.
Radio operators can practice clear and disciplined communications. Equipment can be used outside of controlled environments. Members can learn how to coordinate across different locations and deal with the inevitable unexpected situations that occur during real events.
A radio that works perfectly from a desk may behave very differently between buildings, behind a hill or in a crowded event environment.
Real experience matters.
Serving San Fernando and Beyond
Team 6006 is based in San Fernando and has a long history of volunteer service in the surrounding communities.
As we continue that tradition, our goal is straightforward: contribute where we can genuinely be useful, develop our members through practical experience and strengthen the relationships that make community organizations more resilient.
Service isn't something we reserve for emergencies.
It is something we practice throughout the year.
